PS3 love: Stocking Stuffer Games

For those PS3 owners and lovers out there, here’s five games that you should absolutely purchase this holiday season that are all $30 new or less.

Weighing in at approximately $15-$20 new, Infamous is open world super hero or super villain adventure that is quite awesome and really one of the best of its genre.  The game stars protagonist (or antagonist) Cole who receives the power of controlling electricity in ways that science doesn’t approve of.  The game’s open world environment takes place on the three islands of Empire City.  One of the funnest aspects of the game is traversing the city as Cole, is an urban explorer with many climbing skills from the get go.  The really fun part kicks in as Cole learns to glide on power lines and surf train tracks.  As the game progresses, Cole learns more and more electric powers which are dependent on whether the player chooses to be good or evil.  This is easily a 20-30 hour game the first time through and one of the best purchases that a consumer can make for the Playstation 3.  Also, there’s a sequel on its way so its time to get ready.

I know its a bit odd to include a game that is only $10 on the PSN network and has no physical release.  And I know its harder still to describe this game so that the reader will buy it.  Short description: Flower takes place in the dream of a potted flower in a city apartment.  The flower dreams its a petal flying around a vast field collecting other petals with the power of wind at its back.  And that’s the game.  See it sounds pretty silly but I’m telling you its on of the best games of all time.  The part that is hard to communicate is just how relaxing and absolutely beautiful the game is.  Each individual shard of grass is animated and reacts to the wind.  Revitalizing the dead plants in the area is always a gorgeous colorful sight.  Every petal that is picked up triggers a note and picking up a dozen petals in a row produces a melody.  On top of all this, ThatGameCompany (the developer) even made an emotional journey for this abstract game.  Each level takes you to a darker place where eventually it climaxes to a wonderful ending.  Its $10 so do yourself a favor and buy it.  Don’t worry guys, you won’t lose man points.

Heavenly Sword weighs in at approximately $20-$30 and will take a little less than 10 hours and thumbs of steel to complete.  For some reason, this game had a very controversial response with some buyers complaining about game length and others comparing it to God of War and declaring God of War the victor.  Let me give it to you straight.  Kratos from God of War is a man’s man.  An unrealistic shovanist who is going to get his way no matter what, right or wrong be damned and orgies all the way.  Nariko, the star of Heavenly Sword, is a strong female protagonist filled with doubt on what she must do.  The story and narrative of Heavenly Sword is top notch as well as the majority of the voice acting.  The action in Heavenly Sword is monumental.  Literally fight hundred’s of soldiers with a sword that splits in two with a huge variety of moves and fighting techniques.  There are no boring parts to this game.  The graphics are top notch, the fighting is difficult, and the characters are true.  This is one of the most underrated games of the last 5 years.

3D Dot Game Heroes is about as fun and nostalgic as it gets.  Its hard for me to write about the game when so many other reviewers have written what needs to be said so well.  Do you like the old Nintendo action, adventure, and RPG games such as Dragon Warrior or Legend of Zelda?  Then this game is for you.  With a customizable character (literally you can create your own out of blocks) this 3D pixelated piece of love is humorous and filled with love.  Weighing in at $30, 3D Dot Game Heroes will not disappoint.

And last but not least, the God of War Collection.  Okay seriously, they took God of War 1 and 2, made the graphics HD, and then released them for $30.  Do you realize how many games are compared to God of War?  Bayonetta, Dante’s Inferno, Chaos, Legion, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and the list goes on and on and on.  And God of War wasn’t even the first one to do it.  That’s how good these games are.  God of War is one of the most testosterone filled pieces of work since Conan the Barbarian.  Did you read that sentence up on Heavenly Sword earlier?  Blood and orgies and killing Greek gods.  And why would you kill Greek gods?  Because you killed your family that’s why!  No it doesn’t make sense, its a man’s world!  You kill things in the most brutal methods possible.  Forget about feelings, someone said Kratos was wrong about something at some point and a lot of people are going to die because of it.  You owe this collection to yourself.  Yes there is a man’s card included with some extra balls in case you lost them when your girlfriend made you watch Twilight.
