PSN Updates

We will not be covering video games on this next podcast so here is an update on the PSN facts as they appear.  Updates have been appearing with rampant frequency on the Playstation blog so we will endeavor only to provide once a week updates on the situation.

Sony reported that SOE, the division of Sony responsible for online games such as DC Universe Online, was actually hit with the original intrusion on April 17 and has since shut down the SOE servers.  Originally Sony believed the SOE servers were not affected by the intrusion.  The information accessed was a sever holding dated user and credit card information from 2007 and included some 25 million user accounts, primary from Europe.

Sony clarified that while the password database for the PSN was not kept on an encrypted server, the password information files “were transformed using a cryptographic hash function”.

In a letter response to Congress, Sony indicated a file was found on the server “named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.””.
