News: Video Game Releases

This is where we put out some info about the games we think are going to be somewhere between decent and awesome that release today or later this week.  Typically we skip over the heavy hitters.  Sorry Call of Duty, but 8 million people usually already know about your release date.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate – 3DS

Buy on Amazon

Developed by Mercury Steam and published by Konami.  This is a direct sequel to Lords of Shadow done side scrolling Metroidvania style with playable protagonists Trevor Belmont, Simon Belmont, and Alucard (and I’ll name my son Nhoj).  Really the thing that is going to sell anyone on this game is how invested are you in the Castlevania Lords of Shadow story and whether you own a 3DS or not.  If they make a sequel to this sequel lets hope they abbreviate the name.

Fire Emblem Awakening – 3DS

Buy on Amazon

Developed by Intelligent Systems (Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Paper Mario) and published by Nintendo.  Fire Emblem first came out back in the NES days and can safely claim that it was one of the first tactics style games ever (tactics as in FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Shining Force, Disgaea, etc).  Fire Emblem’s characters can permanently die and form friendships with each other.  In the past games only one class change would occur but not so in Awakening.  This the first Fire Emblem game to my knowledge to include an option for your characters not to permanently die.  Note that there are manufacturing delays for this title, hence the inflated price on Amazon.

Xenoblade Chronicles – Wii

Developed by Monolith (Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos, Super Robot Taisen) and published by Nintendo.  This is one of the Operation Rainfall games and is an action RPG.  Unfortunately this game is only available through Nintendo and Gamestop.  Really for the best review on this game go and listen to the first few episodes of Picking Up the Pixels.

Welcome to the first occasional podcast of the Carousel Afterhours, where we just without any sort of plan or intention or limitation but with alcoholic consumption.  If this gets released on any sort of regular basis, it’ll be on every other Friday evening.  Topics covered include Catherine, Cursed Crusade, Gears of War 3, Rage, Borderlands, Halo Reach,  Battlefield 3, Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, Atlus, Rage, Ruin, Playstation Vita, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Apple, Android, iPhone, iPad, WiiU, AT&T, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Dragon’s Crown, Irrational Games, Move, Kinect, Mass Effect 3, Brink, Modern Warfare 3, Michael Bay, Transformers, Man of Steel, Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Google, and Scott goes pretty far down the tech rabbit hole.

Nintendo E3 Press Conference

And finally we get to the big reveal!  Will the Wii2 cook healthy but tasty food while still delivering above 3.6 alcoholic beverages and spray pheromones that encourage parents to spend time with their kids?  Lets find out!

  • Nintendo wins in the biggest screen department.
  • And Nintendo opens up with a live orchestra doing a Zelda medley with scenes for all the Zelda games and moving into what can only be Skyward Sword.  Glad to see Nintendo is actually doing something for the 25th anniversary for Zelda.  Link’s Awakening is now available on Nintendo’s e-shop.  Legend of Zelda 3D launches next week.  Four Swords Adventure free download, that is freaking awesome because that game is way fun.  Skyward Sword out this holiday.  Golden Wii Mote will be released too.  Legend of Zelda orchestra world tour!
  • Onto the 3DS game lineup starting with Mario Kart with customizable karts.
  • Starfox in 3D with motion control?  Does not sound like that combo will go over well but motion is optional.  Fully voiced though and looks nice.
  • Super Mario 3D.  Yup, its a Mario game.
  • Kid Icarus.  I was always confused by the excitement over this odd platformer.  I mean the new version is absolutely nothing like the original in any aspect.  It also weirds me out that the new Kid Icarus has some gritty dark sword wielding side kick.
  • And a Luigi’s Mansion sequel.  I’m really not the target audience for most of this.
  • Limited time free version of Excite Bike for 3DS.
  • And Pokemon with AR and in 3D.
  • And now the WiiU.  A iPad type device that can be moved from TV to the giant pad device.  Features a lot of integration with the TV.  Its backwards compatible with previous software and hardware.  Controller features a screen, camera, touch screen, and a microphone.  Not designed to be a portable video game machine.  Works by wirelessly communicating with the main system.  Also includes internet browser and video chat.  Seems to be some form of HD but they haven’t told us to what extent.
  • Smash Brothers announced for Nintendo 3DS and WiiU.
  • And now a montage of all the big names in the industry and announcing their games for the WiiU including Batman Arkham City, Assassin’s Creed (unspecified which), Darksiders 2, Dirt, Aliens, Ghost Recon, Metro Last Light, Tekken, and Ninja Gaiden 3 (with blood).
  • The part I’m a bit lost on is how good their HD is.  I don’t know if its my feed but they didn’t quite look as good as the 360 or PS3.  Obviously its good enough that all the modern games can hit it but Nintendo’s going to do for a low price point to keep their customer base.  And Nintendo likes to make money day one on their consoles.  So how hardcore is the tech?  I’ll be curious to see if this system really does have a place in the market.  As is the tech nerd in me is sold but not overly impressed.  The gamer in me doesn’t have much of a reason to get one though.

News: Devil Survivor 2 for DS Announced

Woke up today to find this in my email.  Looks like the DS will still have legs in 2012!  And its a sequel to one of my favorite Shin Megmai Tensei games!  Of course the part that doesn’t make sense is they’re doing an expanded version of the original on the 3DS so why isn’t the sequel on the 3DS?

News: Video Game Releases

Our picks that were released this week!

God Eater Burst – PSP

Developed by Namco Bandia Games and published by D3 Publisher.  Gameplay is similar to the Monster Hunter series but infused with anime stylings and cutscenes.

Okamiden – DS

Developed and published by Capcom, this is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Wii and PS3 game Okami.  Unfortunately I had difficulty finding a trailer so the gameplay footage in this is a bit small.
