Welcome to the third hardly occasional podcast of the Carousel Afterhours, where we just go without any sort of plan or intention or limitation except not so much this time.  This time its all about the upcoming Playstation, Xbox, and Steam boxes.  We (mostly Scott) get pretty techy too.

News: Video Game Releases

This is where we put out some info about the games we think are going to be somewhere between decent and awesome that release today or later this week.  Typically we skip over the heavy hitters.  Sorry Call of Duty, but 8 million people usually already know about your release date.

Silent Hill Book of Memories – PSV

Buy on Amazon

Developed by Wayforward (A Boy and his Blob, Aliens Infestation, Double Dragon Neon) and published by Konami.  Its a dungeon crawling co-op RPG in Silent Hill.  It sounds like the right kind of madness to work.

Sure, it probably won’t be scary at all.  And sure it probably shouldn’t be a Silent Hill game but reality folks: Konami is going to keep making Silent Hill games no matter what.  Akira Yamaoka is gone and who knows if he’ll ever come back.  If they make a good game of any genre under the Silent Hill moniker I think we should consider ourselves lucky.  And really, who doesn’t want to roll up a custom emo-goth chick whose going to axe Pyramid Head a question?

Tokyo Jungle – PSN

Buy Points Card on Amazon

Developed by Playstation C.A.M.P. and Crispy and published by Sony.  I know this is our first Game Releases in a while but seriously: This is a game where you play a Pomeranian that has to hunt and hide for survival in Tokyo without humans.  There are like 50 unlockable animals.  Do you really need to kow more?  Its like $15 or $10 for PSN Plus members.

Starhawk – PS3

Buy on Amazon

Developed by LightBox Interactive and Sony Santa Monica (God of War) and published by Sony.  LightBox is composed of staff from Incognito who developed Warhawk and Twisted Metal Black.  Third person Sci Fi Western shooter where you can summon entire buildings in the midst of battle which can also happen in multiplayer.

News: Playstation Vita Updates

Several pieces of important information have come out of Sony’s TGS presentation as well as web updates concerning the PSV.

Battery Life

Silconera.com posts that the Vita’s battery life will be 3-5 hours when playing a game using headphones with WiFi and Bluetooth turned off.  But the Vita can play video for 5 hours or simply play music for 9 hours.

Multitasking

The 90’s are back my friend except instead of multitasking on PC’s we get to multitask on our game devices.  The Vita allows for web browsing while a game is running, playing music while looking at pictures, and accessing your PSN account.  Evidently the 3DS already does most of this.

So…  Many….  Games!

The amount of games scheduled for the PSV is slightly staggering.  Granted most of these games target a niche audience and really the list is from Japan’s launch which we’ll only get half of, but here are a few highlights: Metal Gear Solid HD, Zone of Enders HD, Persona 4 The Golden, Unnamed Shin Megami Tensei Title, Unnamed Level 5 RPG, Ys IV Remake, Final Fantasy X Remake, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Katamari Damacy, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.  So add all those to the Uncharted and Resistance stuff we already knew.

News: Stuff to Know about the PSV

That’s Playstation Vita right? PSV, sounds much better. Its Sony’s new crazy handheld and maybe we need to get everyone’s info on the same page. So let’s rock some specs and factoids.  And maybe a rumor or two identified as such.

  • Its region free
  • $249 Wi Fi only / $299 with 3G
  • AT&T current exclusive 3G provider
  • CPU – ARM Cortex A9 (4 core)
  • GPU – SGX543MP4+
  • 5 inch 16:9 capacitive multi-touch screen (960 x 544)
  • Rear capacitive multi-touch pad
  • Game and memory cards are proprietary 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32 GB
  • DLC and updates intended to install on game cards
  • Front and rear camera
  • Mic and Speakers
  • Dual analog sticks
  • G and N type wireless and Bluetooth
  • Games will include Uncharted, Wipeout, Little Big Planet, Ruin, ModNation Racers, Dragon’s Crown, and a Bioshock title
  • Due in most regions this fall
  • Battery life not currently known
  • Cross game chat
  • Augmented Reality capability
  • No official word on internal storage or RAM size, only rumors.  If there is internal storage, there probably won’t be much.  RAM size might not be known until the demo units get sent out or someone steals one and sells it to Engadget.
  • Transfarring

Sony E3 Press Conference

And onto Sony!  Gametrailers is telling me the conference is 90 minutes so that whole 5 hour bit was just a rumor.

  • So watching it on the Sony Blog.  The interviews they showed beforehand cracked me up.  Mainly the guy who asked the other guy, “so what do you think of the NGP?” and the guy responds “Oh ho ho ho!”
  • On the PSN a joke aimed at the press and a hardcore apology to the customer base.  I did not expect either of those.  Nor did I expect them to start out talking about the PSN outage or they put it the “elephant in the room”.  I’m sure they’ll get bashed on a lot for making the joke but eh, the press is evil and the joke didn’t actually make light of the situation, just holding a job in the press.
  • And guess we’re getting TV on the PSN as well.  Just go read my comments on it under the Microsoft E3 keynote.
  • Uncharted 3 demo, gorgeous as ever.  And the demo takes place in a capsizing ship.  I use the word “capsizing” because “sinking” is not a good enough descriptor.  Holy crap I love Uncharted!
  • Resistance 3 shown.  Entirely different vibe than the live action trailers gave it.  Lots of crazy giant stuff but I own the first two games.  Nothing they showed really sells me though.  On the other hand, the Move bundle with Resistance 3 is a good deal.  Expensive deal, but you’ll save money than if you bought all those things separately.
  • Playstation brand 24″ 3D TV?  Holy crap it has the dual vision screen thingy, where its split screen without splitting the screen!!!  Like different angles!   The tech nerd in my just went nuts.  The business person in me is asking how much and telling me that I don’t need another TV.  So the TV, glasses, and Resistance game goes for $499.  I don’t like Sony TV’s though!  But crap that’s neat tech.
  • You know I’m really tired of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony touting the title that comes with their device a best seller.
  • I kind of don’t need to see this Infamous 2 trailer since I kind of preordered it months ago.
  • Already knew about Starhawk.  Curious but the trailer didn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know.
  • New Sly Cooper which has a pretty devoted fanbase.  I’m wondering where Sucker Punch found time to do a new one though.  Not like they showed gameplay so they might have just started.
  • Bioshock Infinite trailer and Ken Levine comes on stage to tell us its Playstation Move compatible.  Sounds like they just started implementing it.  Also an Irrational game for NGP.
  • Whoa, did this console war just turn into Trekkies versus the Wars?  Phaser replica version of the Move?  Crazy.
  • Surprise, its Playstation Vita (pronounced V-Ta).  Didn’t see that one coming.  I feel like I’m ordering at a Greek Restaurant.  AT&T is the 3G provider.  No pricing yet?  Really?  Really?  Really?  Well it has cross-party chat.  Hope that means PS3 gets it soon cause if not that is a huge bag of fail. Funny story.  Joystiq just posted an article with the Vita prices for North America.  Didn’t learn it from Sony, learnt it from a Joystiq tweet.  $249 for Wi Fi, $299 for 3G.  Yes it is less expensive than the 3DS.   Sony did finally get around to announcing the price at the end.
  • Touch screen Uncharted?  I’ll stick with the buttons.  Game looks like an Uncharted game though which is a huge complement for a handheld device.
  • Ruin for Vita/PS3 sounds interesting.  Diablo/Torchlight style dungeon crawler with multiplayer aspects and cloud based saving.   Not a system buyer but something to consider if the system is bought.
  • And now musical performances.
