Editorial: What Comics I Read This Week

This is a quick, to the point section on what I picked up in comics in the last couple days and what I think of them.  I might of picked some of them up last week.

Angel & Faith #20

Angel-and-Faith_20
Writer: Christos Gage
Artist: Rebekah Isaacs
With 3 souls in him, Angel is basically incapacitated.  Spike and Faith go out on a mission to fix it.  Another excellent issue to the series, the banter between Faith and Spike is priceless and has me hoping Spike will stick around in this series for a while.  I still have no idea how they’re going to fix the main Buffy comic, but Angel & Faith has a wonderful and rich cast of characters with a plot any fan of the show can get behind.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

GuardiansOfTheGalaxy1cov_02
Writer: Bendis
Artist: McNiven
I’m still bothered Star Lord is a blonde but the issue is pretty good.  Sure we’re missing half the team and they added Iron Man but the characters are for the most part reacting the right way.  Maybe not Drax though.  The whole protect the Earth thing isn’t something they just decided to do, there’s actually a story with Star Lord’s dad and the Badoon that will necessitate it thankfully.  Issue #1 is way too early to judge but it makes me way more confident than Nova #1 did.

Uncanny X-Men #3

Writer: Bendis
Artist: Bachalo
Wow, this issue is kind of awesome.  Granted if you hate Cyclops, you it may make your blood boil, which could be a good reaction in its own respect.  The characters in Uncanny X-Men are ballsy as hell and I’m glad I’m subscribed.  Magick is also quickly becoming a favorite of mine.  No longer is she Colossus’s little sister to kidnap, now she’s pretty awesome and gets quite a few good lines.  If you’re an X-Men fan, the Bendis comics are worth looking into.

Angel and Faith #19

Writer: Christos Gage

Spike joins the team this issue to deliver some humor and other than that is quite frankly a let down, especially after the build up.  We get another snippet of old Ripper in his glory days and everyone has a shown down with Eyghon.  Probably the weakest issue in the series so far, but more weak in that its a transition issue.  No idea what the next issue is going to bring but we’re getting really close to the culmination of the plot point that’s been driving the entire series.  The big questions remain, can they and will they do what they set out to do?

Avengers Arena #5

AvengersArena_5_Coverjohnson
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Kev Walker
Avengers Arena is still a tough nut to crack!  I have no idea where this is going or why.  I still suspect at the end of the series they might go, fooled ya everyone’s still alive!  This issue we follow a giant pick named Kid Briton who is some kind of parallel universe Captain Briton.  If you didn’t know from the off set on what a giant prick he is, they give us plenty of flashbacks of him beating up the fat kid and then trying to bone the blue Atlantean (who also seems to live in the prick department) in front of said beat up kid.  Arcade advances the stakes in an incredibly predictable manor to anyone whose seen Battle Royale or The Hunger Games.  And we find out some unfortunate news about my favorite little girl, Death Locket.

Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1

Artist: Steve McNiven
Truth be told, I don’t know who was right and in a way I don’t care.  Star Lord is a freakin’ brunette!  What the hell is with this blonde crap?  This issue is Bendis revisiting the origin of Star Lord which I have never read so I cannot attest to its accuracy.  It is very entertaining and the art is good.  It seems to be a longer comic than normal as well.  This is also a great jumping on point for cosmic Marvel.  I also cannot tell you what a relief it is to see most of the old team on the last page.  Now lets just hope they work Bug, Adam Warlock, Cosmo, and Mantis back on the rooster and kick out Iron Man!   According to Bendis though the whole point of the new Guardians is to protect Earth which…  well we’ll just have to see how the aliens on the team feel about that.

Nova #1

nova1
Writer: Jeph Loeb
Artist: Ed McGuinness
This series has an uphill battle, with me in particular.  Jeph Loeb single handedly ruined the Ultimate Marvel Universe.  He craps on what I love.  And now he’s helming a book starring not Richard Rider Nova with a section of the Nova Corps that makes fun of the “gold helmets”.  I can’t pretend to understand why Marvel doesn’t seem to be bringing Richard Rider back when everyone else who died with Richard Rider is miraculously back.  I also can’t pretend to understand why Marvel has continuously spit in the face of fans by not even making the characters who knew Richard Rider give a crap that he’s gone.  Now we’re supposed to jump in the boat with Sam Alexander, a character Marvel obviously cares about but no one else does?  Well I’ve read issue #1.  Its okay.  Its not great, its not bad, and its not what I want but its here.  It exists and I will read it for at least 6 issues.

Ultimate Comics X-Men #23

Ultimate_Comics_X-Men_Vol_1_23
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Carlo Baberi
So Storm and Colossus are out on the country side camping out because what?  Wait a second let me recap.  Storm is promoting piece a few issues ago in a concentration camp.  Colossus goes against her ideals and kills the leader of the camp.  Colossus in the Ultimate verse is incredibly gay.  He dates Northwind for a rather long time.  Colossus and Storm are at odds ideal wise for almost the entire series.  Now the two are camping out in the woods together with Storm making googly eyes at him?  Did Wood even read the measly 100 or so issues it would take him to catch up on these characters?  God I hate this series.

Uncanny X-Men #2

uncanny_xmen_2_01
Writer: Brian Bendis

A lot of interesting character development with Emma Frost in this one.  The kids that have been recruited to be the first class in the new Xavier school all seem to be likeable and interesting characters on their own which is basically unheard of for a normal continuum comic (new characters that is).  Magik continues to be creepy and Magneto continues the role of traitor.  Next issue the Avengers show up to inevitable beat up Cyclops and his new group of youngsters.  I am fascinated enough to keep going.

Avengers Arena #4

AvengersArena
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Alessandro Vitti
Avengers Arena is Battle Royale (no Hunger Games here yet) with B and C grade Marvel characters, each issue following a different character trapped in the game.  I use the word game even though its a forest because Arcade set the whole thing.  But that’s all previous issues.  This one follows Nico and Chase of Runaways fame as they meet up with X23, Hazmat, and Reptil.  As always someone dies which is key to determining whether you’ll like this series.  Marvel has been pretty clear, your favorite characters are going to die in tragic, heart wrenching ways without notice.  The positive: Chase gets really good character development that shows Hopeless read the Runaways series.  The con: Hopeless evidently didn’t read Whedon’s issues of Runaways since Nico’s powers aren’t evolved.  Overall I like this series but so much of what makes it good is going to depend on the destination.  Also the last page is a pretty big WTF moment.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #18

Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer_Season-9_18
Writer: Andrew Chambliss
Artist: George Jeanty
As amazing as Angel and Faith, Spike, and Willow have been during season 9, Buffy has oddly been lacking.  I got pretty excited with the return of Illyria even though I’m sad her pet demon “Pancakes” won’t make it over from IDW.  Illyria is one of those characters that I feel in love with during the IDW Angel series.  We pick up with Buffy, Illyria, and the Klingon look alike confronting “Sev”(short for “Severin”) the siphon.  They escape, form a plan with the council of beings who still have magic, which are probably the most entertaining portion of the issue, and surprise, the plan doesn’t work out in pretty much exactly the way you think it won’t.  The issue gives Xander and Dawn a bit of screen time.  The problem is as much as all the other Buffy-verse comics understand these characters are best when they can play off each other, Buffy doesn’t.  If I seem angry its because the other Buffy-verse comics are good, it makes no sense why this should be so bad!  Buffy and Illyria are pretty boring together because they have no emotional baggage toward each other.  You know who would be entertaining interacting with Illyria?  ANYONE ELSE.  Hell a Xander/Illyria conversation would probably be mind blowing.  Buffy’s plan in the issue is out right idiotic and there is no reason the character shouldn’t know better as a proven tactician.    Frustrating!

Uncanny X-Men #1

uncanny-large-final2
Writer: Brian Bendis

I will try to write this without complaining about the madness that is Cyclops’ new powers.  This issue is entirely setup.  Cyclops is gathering mutants with Magneto, Emma, Magik, and a few new faces.  The issue takes place from the perspective of one of those individuals being a traitor and wanting to take Cyclops down by ratting to SHIELD.  You should be able to guess who the traitor is immediately even though the story treats it as a big reveal.  The big reveal is also the same person who broke Cyclops out of prison after ol’ Slim killed Xavier so either SHIELD is being played or Bendis really dropped the ball.  The idea of Cyclops starting a mutant revolution is neat as well as the sentinels return.  I find myself pretty curious about Magik even if its like watching a friend’s daughter grow up to be a stripper.  The thing that is crazy to me is everyone hates Cyclops yet he still has followers.  Even Emma Frost hates the guy but she’s right behind him.  Like I mentioned in past posts, you really don’t know about a Bendis series for several issues because the man builds slow which isn’t a bad thing.  The other thing I will give Bendis is so far he isn’t falling prey to any of the typical favorites that most writers go to for X-Men.  X-Men characters are more divisive than any other group in my opinion and writers are just as likely to hate or love a character as anyone else.  It really hurts when the author writing your favorite character hates them.  X-fans know what I’m talking about.

Ultimate Comics X-Men #22

STK522783
Writer: Brian Bendis
Artist: Chris Bachalo
I’m the beaten wife who keeps going back to the abusive husband that is Ultimate X-Men.  I remember the love we once shared and see potential good but when you’re viewing through the ground beef of black eyes, any hope is a lifeline.  So, the prejudice son of a preacher was turned into some sort of power absorbing sentinel, took over part of the US, and then Kitty Pryde lead a team of Wolverine’s son, Icemen, Rogue, and other people on a guerrilla war to save mutants, eventually founded their own country, and now have invented a seed that can adapt and grow under any conditions and the world wants to murder them for it.  Also Iron Man because Iron Man has to be in everything now since he’s the most popular Marvel movie franchise.  Wolverine’s son is a surprisingly good character and Kitty Pryde is probably one of the best choices to lead the book.  This issue is Iron Man giving Kitty Pryde political advice, a politically motivated jet fighter attack, more political advice, and que end issue shadowy suited board members planning evil against our protagonists.  I hate myself.

Ultimate Comics All-New Spider-Man #20

Ultimate_Comics_Spider-Man_Vol_2_20
Writer: Brian Bendis
Artist: Sara Pichelli
The story picks up where it left off, with Venom attacking Miles’ dad thinking the dad is the new Spider-Man. This is an action issue and truth be told when I saw the end I had to flip back to figure out where it happened. Ultimate Spidey is a great series, new character and all, but like all of Bendis’ books its hard to read on a weekly basis. With fewer pages per comic and just as many advertisements, comic writers like Bendis who really like the art to play out facial expressions, have issues that really don’t show their worth unless read in a trade. I also want to mention I love Miles is constantly asking himself “what would Peter do?”

Willow #4

willow4b
Writer: Christos Gage and Jeff Parker
Artist: Brian Ching
This series continues to be quite a bit of fun with a twist I realized was coming about halfway through the issue and kicked myself for not realizing several issues ago (big tv show throw back). Willows quest to restore magic to the world continues as she questions her continuing stay in the magical lesbian paradise. The trouble is you probably should read up as to what’s happened so far before even starting Willow since its entirely related to the conclusion of season 8 and Angel and Faith.

All-New X-Men #7

All-New-X-Men_7-674x1024
Writer: Brian Bendis
Artist: David Marquez
Its hard to gauge whether All-New X-Men is any good since so much of it is going to depend on where these characters go. Cyclops visits an old safe deposit box he keeps, causing near by panic among civilians and Mystique, whom young slim has never met, plays with his head quite a bit. The problem is barely anything happens from issue to issue. If the next big event is coming in March and is an X-Men event, I just don’t see how they have enough time to build this story to where it needs to be to. If March hits and this series becomes like New Avengers during Secret Invasion or Civil War, which is basically a short side story for the main event, I can’t see myself continuing to follow it no matter how good the regular series is.

X-Men: 10 Facts from 1-50

After reading the first 50 issues of the original run of X-Men I decided it would be fun to present 10 interesting tidbits which might be retroactively changed later because that’s what comics do.  The original X-Men are radically different from what they become.  And if you aren’t familiar with them, the original team only consisted of Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Beast, Iceman, and Angel.
